OUT OF THIS WORLD

from Brian Cox, Patron

Welcome to The World in its second incarnation.

Since last year’s festival, some momentous events have happened throughout the world that have touched so many lives.

The world saw the election of the first African American President of The United States.

The world saw hurricanes ravaging the islands of Haiti and Cuba, and celebrated the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka.

The world witnessed the houses of last year’s celebrated Children of Cambodia dance group being violently demolished.

The world took sides as the Queen of Pop, Madonna, fought for Mercy, the orphan girl-child from Malawi. This case brought the spotlight onto the system of adoption in Malawi and divided world opinion.

And the world still mourns the death of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

The World @ St George’s presents some of these stories from these world cultures, and celebrates the power of the arts to bring hope and transform people’s lives. The World Festival is about bringing people together, creating new music and making new friends.

We hope you will embrace The World @ St George’s, in all that it offers, the new bar and cafe, the unique workshop programme, and dance the night away in “The Church of Salsa” - the hottest latin night club in town, featuring legendary Cuban salsa band “Sonora La Calle”, rubbing shoulders on the dance floor with the artists from the most vibrant multi-cultural venue at the festival.

I hope you agree with me that The World, this year, is truly an amazing place.
